Apart from the audio mixes featuring several soulful UK artists (Alice Russell), this week’s articles on onthebuzz are pretty male oriented, what the hell happened to equality and all that blues.
This obviously rectifies of sorts with Speech Debelle (well is just the one…), an upcoming female hip hop artist with a smooth flow/rhyme of words/stories against minimal jazzy beats and from the UK!
Speech Debelle is an hip hop artist on Big Dada Recordings they state on the website: “The first thing about Speech Debelle that strikes the ear is a contrast. Her voice is warm, youthful and listenable, and if you heard her in the background you might assume that her lyrics were the same. You’d be better placed tuning into them.”
On first glance your thinking – artist+label=biase No Sir (something along those lines), have a sniff around to find out more about the Speech Debelle they’re right on the money! There is this tune by Miss Debelle called The Key - goodness its different, conscious punchy wordplay and a jazzy backing track that is reminiscent of the jazz era in the 1960s, Yessir!
What the Press says about Speech Debelle:
“Potent, precious, poignant. Star of the year already” – DJ
“Just the right amount of attitude and smarts… Unique – and uniquely British” – Pitchfork
“A luscious original with incredible lyrics.” – Independent
“Like no hip hop record you’ve ever heard” – Dazed & Confused
We need say no more about Speech Debelle, her debut album “Speech Therapy” is released on 1st June, 2009, meanwhile here is a track to butcher for tasters.
