Food for thought: Beyond Recognition

Post by: 06 January 2011
We get better when we compete inwardly We get better when we compete inwardly

One lesson I learn over the last couple of years is to not place a high value on trophies of achievements. Medals, trophies and awards often come from being subjectively (ask Kanye) recognised as the best in one's field - when compared to others - and may often be mistook as a symbol of reaching the status quo.

Drawing on olympic sprinters running a hundred metre race, the athlete who wins receives a gold medal, in recognition of being the fastest on the day amongst other competitors. Such athlete is more prone to be subject to complacency than his competitors. Why?

Because he now has the evidence of his superior performance in form of a medal. What such athlete may fail to recognise is that although the fastest among his peers, he may not have performed at his personal best.

The athlete with the silver medal will ultimately work harder in pursuit of a gold medal and will believe that there's more to come from within.

Same logic applies to everything we do. Athletes who have been consistent at the top, aim to beat their own records and not the ones set by others afterall once you've beaten them all, whats next?

We only get better when we compete inwardly (i.e. to be the best we can be) and not against those who challenge us!
